Abstract
A survey conducted on 1,103 patients orcaretakers visited Korean medicalclinics and hospitals between August25,2011toSeptember30,2011by theMinistry ofHealth and Welfaresand Korea InstituteforHealthandSocialAffairswasanalyzedandobtainedfollowingresults:1.Forsociodemographicdistribution,female(813)outnumberedmale(290)patientswithmajority of patientsranging from 30sto60s.Married patients(793)outnumbered unwed (150)patientsand 65.0% with higherthan high schooleducation.Statisticalsignificancewasseen in gender,age,maritalstatus,andeducationlevelbutnosignificantdifferenceforstatusofemployment,income level,and typesofinsurancebetween the clinics and hospitals.(P<0.05).45.1% had lessthan £Ü2,000,000inmonthlysalaryandmostofcoveragewasprovidedbyeitherregionalorworkinsurance. 2.67.9% ofthepatientsratedhealthconditionstobebetterthanaverageand32.1% listedaspoor. PeopleingoodhealthshowedtendencytovisitKoreanmedicalfacilities.Musculo-skeletalconditions such as arthritis,ankle sprain,lumbago,muscular injury,and frozen shoulder were common conditions,followedbygastricdisorders,commoncoldandherbaltonics.Nosignificantdifference wasobservedbetweentheclinicsandhospitalsforaboveconditions,butsignificancewasseenin atopicdermatitis,stroke,andsequelafrom trafficaccidents(P<0.05). 3.TenmostcommonconditionsaddressedatKoreanmedicalfacilitieswerelumbago,arthritis,muscular injury, backsprain, gastricdisorders, anklesprain, commoncold, herbaltonics, frozenshoulderand stroke.Majortreatmentmodalitiesrenderedwereherbalmedicine,herbalsupplements,acupuncture and moxibustion,cupping,tuina,and Korean medicalphysicaltherapy.No significantdifference existedbetweentheclinicsandhospitals. 4.Allmodalitiesshowedatleast85% effectiveness.Nostatisticalsignificantdifferencebetweentheclinics andhospitalsexceptforherbaldecoction.(P=0.0452)5.88.3% ofresponsesshowedtreatmentsatisfactionwithsignificantdifferencebetweentheclinicsand hospitals (P=0.002).The occurrence ofside effects was at2%,mostly coming from treating digestive,skin,kidney disordersand neurologicalissues.No significantdifference wasobserved betweentheclinicsandhospitals. From theaboveresults,thetypicalpopulationvisitingKoreanmedicalfacilitiescanbesummarizedas being middle aged female with relatively highereducation and moderately low income.The health conditionisgenerallygoodandthepurposeofvisitistoreceivetraditionaltreatmentsofacupuncture,herbalmedicine,andphysicaltherapy.Treatmentefficacyandsatisfactionwerehighwithnosignificant.
